Remediation of hexavalent chromium contamination

The PRAGOVKA site in Prague is a significant industrial brownfield site contaminated with hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) and other heavy metals resulting from historical industrial production. The contamination posed a risk to groundwater and the future use of the site.

The OPV project focused on stabilizing the site and reducing environmental risks while preserving the possibility of further development of the location.

Solution

Based on a detailed risk analysis and mathematical modeling, a unique automated remediation system was designed:

  • application of in-situ high-pressure grouting,
  • chemical reduction of hexavalent chromium to a less mobile form,
  • monitoring of the remediation process using monitoring wells.

Result

There was a significant reduction or elimination of contamination in both the saturated and unsaturated zones of the rock environment. The area was stabilized and prepared for further safe use.
